Walter L. Mosley
b. 1960 Hattisburg, MS
Walter started drawing at three
and was always "the class artist" in grade
school. In high school he studied "Commercial Art" and
worked at Six Flags Amusement Park doing portraits. In his
early twenties, Walter studied portraiture with Bob Gerbracht
in San Jose, California for a year and a half and subsequently
graducated from Fine Art at San Jose State University with
a BA. While there he met Maynard Stewart who had studied
with Frank Vincent Dumond at the Art Students League of New
York. Upon graduation, Walter moved to New York to attend
the Art Students League and studied with Frank Mason for
a period of about 10 years. Like Mr. Stewart, Mr. Mason had
been a Dumond student and took over teaching duties from
Mr. Dumuond.
Desiring to get back to figure painting and study with his mentor once again,
Walter recently returned to the League but after two months Mr. Mason retired
and soon after passed away. Walter was subsequenlty asked to monitor the class
where he is currently studying with Thomas Torak.
Walter finds inspiration in the Old Masters and Impressionists: Velazquez, Rubens,
Rembrandt, Sargent, Sorolla, Child Hassam, Willard Metcalf and Fantin LaTour.
Walter is an American Artists Professional League Fellow where
he has shown repeatedly as well as at the "Salon International" at
the Greenhouse Gallery of Art in San Antonio, TX, and the
Audubon Artists, NYC. Life Member of the Art Students League
of New York.

"It is my hope that my artwork provide a
soothing respite from the violence and negativity of the modern world. This
doesn't mean that I turn my back on reality through romantic, sentimental
pastiche but rather that I show it in a positive way, the way that I see it.
I have a great awe and respect for the Creation which I believe was designed
by an Intelligent Creator and it is my wish to show this love and admiration
through my art, to show His glory.
I paint to please myself and believe that if I am successful at that, then
others will find pleasure in it as well. I strive to show beauty, subtlety,
and harmony through my goal of expressing form revealed by light through atmosphere
just as my forbears did so magnificently."
