Most of my subway sketches are practice – like a pianist doing his scales, just that, just practice. But some of them turn out really well and leave me with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment; those are the exception rather than the rule. Also I deceive myself by believing I’m sketching incognito, unnoticed as it were, but I realize that that also is the exception rather than the norm, at least as far as it goes when the subjects’ eyes are gazing back to me – would seem obvious right? At any rate what I’m trying to say here is that some credit goes to the sitter as well – having recognized that he or she is the victim of my scrutiny, he or she could get up and sit somewhere else of at the least move about freely without concern for the person over there sketching them.
