Swedenborg Church

This is a plein air painting (painted on location, on site) that I completed in August 2018. The painting shows the Swedenborgian Church located on Lyon Street. The church is a beautiful building. It is one of the earliest examples of The Arts and Crafts Movement architectural style. Consequently, the building has obtained National Historic Landmark status.  The church is named after Emmanuel Swedenborg. I worked on it late in the day on a cloudy day. In fact it took two days. I started drawing it at around 6pm and came back at approximately the same time the following day to complete the painting.

Swedenborg had a strong influence on the great American landscape painter George Innes. Because I’m a Christian and because George Inness is one of my favorite painters, doing this painting carried significant meaning for me.
